Hard-Coated 650nm Shortpass Edge Filter Description

The 650nm Shortpass Edge Filter is a high-performance optical interference filter designed to selectively transmit light with wavelengths shorter than 650nm while blocking red and near-infrared light above 650nm.

  • With a cutoff wavelength of 650 ±3nm, it precisely separates visible and near-infrared regions, effectively filtering out background red light and improving system contrast and detection sensitivity.
  • It offers ≥90% transmission from 355–640nm, ensuring maximum light throughput in the excitation or target visible wavelength range and enhancing optical efficiency.
  • The filter provides OD4 blocking depth up to 830nm, effectively suppressing unwanted long-wavelength infrared background light to eliminate interference and noise.
  • We utilize a hard-coated process, giving the filter excellent resistance to scratching, humidity, and aging, making it suitable for harsh environments or long-term use.
  • Using D263T as the substrate, the filter offers high transmittance, no visible defects, and no internal bubbles or striae, ensuring consistent spectral performance across the entire aperture—especially ideal for high-resolution imaging and precision measurements.

650nm Shortpass Edge Filter Applications

  • Machine Vision
Many industrial ambient light sources contain significant near-infrared components. Silicon-based cameras are highly sensitive to near-infrared light, and these unwanted IR signals can reduce image contrast, causing color-based detection algorithms to fail or produce errors. Installing a 650nm shortpass filter directly in front of the camera lens, in combination with white LED illumination, can reduce interference from ambient IR light and improve system stability under varying lighting conditions.
  • Lighting and Display
In certain specialized lighting or projection applications, it is necessary to precisely control the output spectrum and remove unwanted long-wavelength components. Placing a 650nm shortpass filter at the light source output can significantly reduce infrared thermal radiation, protecting the illuminated object. It also helps achieve a purer “cool white” appearance or enhances the saturation of short-wavelength colors.
  • Astronomical Observation
The night sky background is not completely dark. There are significant atmospheric molecular emission lines in the near-infrared, along with deep red/near-infrared light leakage from many artificial sources. Many celestial objects emit or reflect mainly in the <650nm range. Filtering out ineffective long-wavelength background light effectively enhances the contrast of these objects against the sky background. Installing a 650nm shortpass filter in an astronomical camera—either combined with narrowband filters such as H-alpha or O-III, or as one of the filters in broadband RGB imaging—can effectively block near-infrared airglow and light pollution that cause major background noise, resulting in a darker sky background.
