FAQs
A fluorescent filter is a core optical component of fluorescence imaging systems, typically used in fluorescence microscopes, imaging setups, or fluorescence detectors. It consists of multi-layer dielectric coatings that allow only a specific range of wavelengths to pass while blocking all others, precisely controlling the excitation and emission wavelength ranges and efficiently separating the excitation light from the sample’s fluorescence.
The main function of a fluorescent filter is to separate the excitation light from the sample’s fluorescence signal by selectively transmitting or reflecting light, thereby preventing background noise and improving image quality. It comprises three parts:
-
Excitation filter: Excites the fluorescent dye in the sample.
-
Emission filter: Allows the sample’s emitted fluorescence to pass while blocking excitation light and other stray light.
-
Dichroic mirror: Reflects excitation light toward the sample and transmits emitted light to the camera or photomultiplier tube.
When selecting a fluorescent filter, the most important step is to choose the correct center wavelength and bandwidth for both the excitation and emission filters. The center wavelengths must match the excitation and emission peaks of the fluorescent dye. Regarding bandwidth:
-
Narrow bandwidth (10–25 nm): Suitable for single-color fluorescence or multicolor imaging where strict channel crosstalk avoidance is required.
-
Wide bandwidth (30–50 nm): Suitable for weak signals or dyes with broad emission spectra.
Yes. We have a large inventory of standard fluorescent filters that can meet most customer needs. We also accept custom orders—whether it’s for special wavelength requirements or matching excitation/emission spectra of multiple dyes. By specifying center wavelength, bandwidth, transmission, blocking range, and size, we can deliver custom filters in about 15–20 days.
Absolutely. We can custom-make multi-band filters that support multiple excitation and emission channels on a single substrate. To date, we have supplied customers with dual-band, triple-band, and quad-band fluorescent filters.
